About this art: This piece was inspired by a painting by Sophie Hill titled "Discovery," which pictures a blue hand and extended index finger reaching toward a gold flower. A bit of gold dust/pollen appears on the tip of the blue finger. This image really moved me as I have felt much closer to nature as a result of social distancing from the pandemic. The two simple contrasting colors are represented in the music by a contrast between open sonorities and more condensed, dissonant sounds. Upon thinking about the painting more, I realized how wonderful it is that despite the horror of a growing global pandemic, spring has still come. The trees and flowers that surround my rural home are unaffected or perhaps even benefit from humanity's situation and our decrease in pollution. Throughout almost the full length of this short piece, a lonely F# is repeated in different registers of the piano, unaffected by what is going on around it. No matter how lonely and dim things seem, we can always look around and enjoy the beauty of the physical world around us. Enjoy!
